Martin on Cloud 9 with Gliding Success

Tue 21st Oct 2008

Cadet Sergeant Martin Sullivan has become the latest member of 340 Squadron to gain solo gliding wings after successfully completing an ATC Gliding Scholarship recently.

Martin underwent training at 615 Volunteer Gliding Squadron based at Kenley near Caterham in Surrey, flying the Viking T1 glider.

After demonstrating the ability to launch, fly and land the glider safely, Martin's instructor left the back seat of the aircraft and sent him off for the most memorable flight a pilot will ever have - first solo.

Launched into the air by a large winch at the other end of the grass runway, Martin released the cable at over 1,000 feet before flying a circuit of the airfield and landing again.

Huge congratulations go to Martin on this fantastic achievement.

Air Cadets are able to complete Gliding Scholarships from the age of 16, meaning they could fly solo before they can drive a car! The training is also completely free!
