What We Do

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme

The ATC is the largest provider of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme in the country. Not surprising really when His Royal Highness is our Air Commodore-in-Chief!

The scheme is a voluntary, non-competitive programme of practical, cultural and adventurous activities for young people aged 14 - 25. It consists of three award levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Each award has different criteria for entry and the level of achievement necessary to complete each award.

The Bronze and Silver Awards have four sections:

  • Service - helping others in the community
  • Expeditions - training and planning for and undertaking a journey
  • Skills - demonstrating an ability in almost any hobby, skill or interest
  • Physical recreation - participating in and improving your aptitude in sport, dance or fitness

The Gold Award as a further section:

  • Residential Project - undertaking a purposeful enterprise with young people not previously known to the participant.

ATC cadets have the advantage that the aeronautical studies they undertake count towards the Skills section, being a cadet non-commissioned officer (NCO) counts towards the Service section and they take part in sport and expedition training as well.

The Award is widely recognised by employers as it helps demonstrate that award holders are keen to take on new challenges, have a higher level of self confidence than their counterparts and have leadership qualities with the added experience of teamwork.

340 Squadron cadets actively participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. These are the badges you could wear on your uniform if you achieve the relevant award:
